Preparing the Next Generation: Wealth Education and Family Governance

This course explores the practical realities of estate planning beyond the technical transfer of assets, but in developing family skills and knowledge to manage the assets going forward. Attorneys will examine how estate plans function in real family systems and dynamics, where communication gaps and differing values can undermine even the most carefully drafted documents, and how a lack of financial literacy can undermine them.

The program addresses the goals and concerns of affluent families, the challenges that wealth can create, and the behavioral and relational dynamics that often arise during generational transitions. Participants will learn about tools and strategies designed to bridge gaps in knowledge and expectations among family members, and how attorneys can help clients foster long-term stewardship rather than short-term wealth transfer.

This course is designed for attorneys at all levels of experience. It will provide practical guidance that attorneys can incorporate into their practice regarding client counseling and long-term family governance strategies. Attorneys who practice in estate planning, tax planning, or related advisory roles are especially encouraged to attend.
