A.B.A., Goal III has the objectives to “1. Promote full and equal participation in the association, our profession, and the justice system by all persons. 2. Eliminate bias in the legal profession and the Justice System.” Attorneys have an ethical obligation to make unbiased decisions. This course aims to help attorneys recognize where they have bias and develop strategies to reduce bias.

This interactive program explores the science and practice of legal decision-making, focusing on how attorneys can recognize, interrupt, and overcome bias to ensure optimal decisions. Participants will engage with polls and quick exercises designed to reinforce learning and self-awareness, while gaining actionable strategies for improved objectivity and client outcomes.

This program is designed for all attorneys as it covers decision-making, which is a core function of being a legal professional.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the basics of current brain science and how this science explicates our decision-making.
  2. Identify how cognitive shortcuts can undermine good decision-making, especially where stress multiplies and impedes an attorney’s careful attention.
  3. Apply evidence-based techniques to disrupt bias.
  4. Assess blank spots in attorney decision-making.
  5. Develop a quick action plan for integrating bias-reduction strategies into legal work.
