Export Controls and Economic Sanctions

About This Course
*The program is accessible via Zoom or Telephone.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine triggered broad-ranging export controls and economic sanctions implemented by the US, EU, UK, and many other allied countries around the world against Russia and Belarus. The sanctions and export controls are not comprehensive programs such as those imposed against Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Syria. Meanwhile, export controls against Chinese parties and sectors have continued to be ratcheted up. Counsel must be able to identify potential legal and regulatory prohibitions and restrictions in client's sales, purchases, and investments as well as strategic alliances to avoid violations that can lead to civil penalties, denial of export privileges, and the potential for criminal investigations and prosecutions.
The program is designed to provide new and experienced attorneys in various practice areas with an overview of the legal and regulatory framework for export controls and economic sanctions, the due diligence and compliance expectations of federal agencies and what is necessary to meet them, and how to address a client’s unwitting or systemic violations. Please note this program will not delve in-depth into legal and regulatory export controls governing defense articles and services under the ITAR.
Corporate and business attorneys, merger and acquisition attorneys, and in-house counsel who have primary responsibility for export controls and economic sanctions—regardless of practice experience—are encouraged to attend this program.
