About The Lecturer
Layla Maurer is an attorney for Library Futures at NYU Law’s Engelberg Center, where she is helping to develop the legal tools needed for a program aimed towards facilitating more and better access to digital resources and media for use and lending in libraries. Before undertaking this role, Layla worked as an attorney for Wizards of the Coast advising on licensing, brand development, and digital game strategy. Her work at Wizards focused on structuring relationships that support the responsible use of intellectual property in interactive media, which included drafting and negotiating license agreements, reviewing marketing and in-game assets, and supporting content planning across multiple platforms.
Before becoming an attorney, Layla worked in digital media, content systems, and higher education. Her roles included systems support, database management, and product testing for platforms focused on digital content delivery and fair use in academic settings. This combination of technical and instructional experience continues to shape her collaborative approach and her focus on long-term, adaptable legal frameworks for digital and creative projects.
She earned her M.L.I.S. from Kent State University and her J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law, where she concentrated in law, technology, and the arts. She has returned to the school as a guest lecturer and speaker. Her publications include writing on artificial intelligence, Section 230, and trademark issues in esports and digital culture.
