About The Lecturer

Coming from a decade-long background in SaaS, digital media, and data management, Layla Maurer has focused her legal career of four years extensively on digital licensing and brand advisement for a variety of content across platforms and with partners of all sizes. This role requires a deep understanding and learning in data privacy, AI, compliance, risk, and entertainment, all of which she has integrated into her practice. She collaborates with business teams and stakeholders on modernizing and streamlining processes, templates, term sheets, clause banks, data privacy addendums, and user-facing policies, and she regularly works with outside creators and their counsel to facilitate easy and mutually beneficial relationships between the parties. Her aim is always to encourage and ensure the digital future of creators’ IP – whether through digital marketplaces, video games, e-books, apps, virtual tabletops, or other avenues – while securing and protecting physical expressions of the same.

Layla is licensed to practice in New York State and Washington State. She graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Law with a concentration in Law, Technology, and the Arts (with honors) where she acted as Copy Editor for the Health Matrix journal and Research and Teaching Assistant for the Legal Writing curriculum and law library. During her studies, she served as President of the Sports & Entertainment Law Society and earned the CALI award for LGBT+ Legal Issues, where she authored an article on demonetization of marginalized creators’ content which was later selected for publication. She has since returned to the school as a guest lecturer for the Technology in Law Practice course and as a guest speaker for the Veale Institute’s series on Artificial Intelligence. Her other published articles are on artificial intelligence, Section 230, and trademark in Esports.
