About The Lecturer
Layla Maurer is an attorney at Wizards of the Coast, where she advises on licensing, brand development, and digital game strategy. Her work focuses on structuring relationships that support the responsible use of intellectual property in interactive media. She works closely with internal stakeholders and external counsel to align legal protections with business and creative goals. Her experience includes drafting and negotiating license agreements, reviewing marketing and in-game assets, and supporting content planning across multiple platforms.
Before becoming an attorney, Layla worked in digital media, content systems, and higher education. Her roles included systems support, database management, and product testing for platforms focused on digital content delivery and fair use in academic settings. This combination of technical and instructional experience continues to shape her collaborative approach and her focus on long-term, adaptable legal frameworks for creative projects.
She earned her J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law, where she concentrated in law, technology, and the arts. She has returned to the school as a guest lecturer and speaker. Her publications include writing on artificial intelligence, Section 230, and trademark issues in esports and digital culture.
