Legal research costs are significant and, unfortunately, must be either absorbed by the law firm/corporation or passed on to the client. In this program, attendees will learn how to reduce or eliminate legal research costs by utilizing free or low-cost legal research databases and resources. The course will begin with an examination of subscription-based services and their advantages and disadvantages. Later, attendees will analyze several free legal research databases. A live demonstration of these resources will be included. Finally, attendees will develop an understanding of Google and Google Scholar, including some practical tips for maximizing these search engines.

  • Identify and describe the costs, advantages, and disadvantages of legal research sites like WestLaw and LexisNexis
  • Compare, distinguish, and analyze various low-cost and free legal research databases for attorneys
  • Implement strategies for utilizing Google to produce more targeted legal research results

Brenda Seibert is an Assistant Professor in the Business and Innovation Department and Learning Resources Department. In 2020, she was awarded the Bucks County Community College “Above and Beyond Award.” She also serves as Program Director of the Bucks County Community College Paralegal Program and Paralegal Program Coordinator. Her course concentration includes Torts, Civil Litigation, Business Law, and Insurance and Risk Management. As an attorney, she represented major department stores, national drugstore chains, and manufacturers of large-scale construction equipment.
