About The Lecturer

Charlie Germano is an attorney with over 30 years of experience leading software development, cybersecurity, and operations teams in both the private and nonprofit sectors. As Counsel and Senior Technologist in the Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU) at BBB National Programs, he leads the organization’s COPPA Safe Harbor compliance initiatives and advises on other child and youth privacy issues.

Prior to joining CARU, Charlie held several roles as a technologist. He was head of cybersecurity and IT operations at Save the Children, where he led the department responsible for protecting the personal information of millions of children in the United States and around the world. He also was a chief software architect at HP, where he led the team of architects responsible for all reservations and airport systems for some of the world’s largest airlines.

Charlie holds a JD with a specialization in Intellectual Property from the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law. He also holds a BS in Organizational Leadership from Colorado State University, and an executive education certificate in Digital Transformation from the University of California Haas School of Business. He holds numerous technical certifications, including Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) and ITIL Certification in IT Operations.

Charlie frequently contributes to media conversations on children’s digital privacy and has been interviewed by numerous media outlets, including The Guardian, Privacy Daily, and MediaPost.
