Understanding the Virginia CLE Requirement
Total CLE Requirement:
12 credit hours annually
Credit Format:
4 hours must be taken live
8 may be completed online
Credit Breakdown:
10 hours General
2 hours Ethics/Professionalism
Beginning November 1, 2019, each active member of the Virginia State Bar shall certify whether they have attended, within the past three (3) years, at least one (1) credit hour of lawyer well-being education related to the practice of law. Failure to comply with this rule shall not subject the member to the penalties of Paragraph 13.2 of these rules.

Newly Admitted Requirement:
In addition to the standard CLE requirement, new admittees must complete the Virginia State Bar’s “The Professionalism Course” within their first 12 months of admission.
