Understanding the North Dakota CLE Requirement
Total CLE Requirement:
45 credit hours every three years
30 hours must be taken live
15 may be completed online
42 hours General
3 hours Ethics
Attorneys must self-report completion of CLE requirements by sending certificates of attendance to the North Dakota Commission for CLE. CLE Reporting Group 1 reports in 2021 for the period beginning July 1, 2018–June 30, 2021. CLE Reporting Group 2 reports in 2022 for the period beginning July 1, 2019–June 30, 2022. CLE Reporting Group 3 reports in 2023 for the period beginning July 1, 2020-June 30, 2023. Carry-Over Credits. Members receiving credit hours in excess of the 45 hour minimum taken during the three year reporting period may carry forward a maximum of 15 hours to the next reporting period. No ethics hours may be carried forward.
Newly Admitted Requirement:
Depending on when an attorney is admitted to practice in North Dakota, he or she is assigned to one of three reporting groups. These groups are designed so that all attorney compliance periods are staggered, and not all attorneys complete and report compliance in the same year.
