Icon About This Course

In this informative and poignant program, Christopher O’Donnell examines the causes behind the high rates of substance abuse and mental health issues in the legal profession. This program considers two personality types: the “romantic idealist” and the “judge”, which are both drawn to the field of law and are also more likely to have addictive proclivities.

Mr. O’Donnell explains that the realities of the legal profession can chip away at the romantic idealist’s rosy outlook on the world and could cause them to turn to the escapism of addictive habits such as drugs and alcohol. The susceptibility to addiction for the “judge” personality type is often manifested in the need for control. Additionally, many law firms create an environment that significantly increases the risk of addiction as workaholism and drinking cultures are often encouraged. Lawyers are commonly categorized as “high functioning alcoholics”, which leads many attorneys to go undiagnosed and not receive help when they need it.

Mr. O’Donnell sheds light on these issues and the need for a change in the culture of the legal profession and also urges those struggling with addiction to turn to medical intervention for the sake of their health, well-being, and careers.
